New SOA Hot Topics
Roundtable Podcast
on CIO SOA Concerns,
featuring Sandy Carter,
Judith Hurwitz and
Richard Soley
Needham, MA, USA –
February 14, 2008 – The
SOA Consortium™ today

and transcript of the
SOA Hot Topics
Roundtable: CIO SOA
Concerns, recorded at
the SOA Consortium
meeting in San Francisco
in December is now
available. To access the
podcast, visit
http://www.soa-consortium.org/podcast-ca-rt-pr.
The objective of the
CIO SOA Concerns
Roundtable was to
generate a meaningful
conversation between
Thought Leaders and
meeting attendees on the
most pressing concerns
for CIOs considering,
promoting or adopting
business-driven SOA.
This session was
recorded and is now
available as an
on-demand podcast and as
a downloadable
transcript at
http://www.soa-consortium.org/podcast-ca-rt-pr.
CIO SOA Concerns
Thought Leaders:
- Sandy Carter, VP
SOA & WebSphere
Strategy, Channels
and Marketing, IBM
- Judith Hurwitz,
President, Hurwitz &
Associates
- Dr. Richard Mark
Soley, Executive
Director, SOA
Consortium
- Moderator:
Brenda Michelson,
Program Director,
SOA Consortium
The Roundtable kicks
off with each panelist
presenting a brief
overview on what they
see as the most pressing
concerns for CIOs while
they’re either
considering or rolling
out a business-driven
SOA strategy in their
organization. They were
also asked to consider
what areas CIOs should
be concerned about that
they don’t know yet
based on input from
other CIOs, from their
own research and work in
the industry.
Judith Hurwitz’s top
three concerns for CIOs
include getting the IT
and business working
together; that CIOs need
to take a holistic
perspective, looking at
SOA as an enterprise
driven strategy; and
ensuring that an
organization has a
single view of the
customer. Sandy Carter
stressed the need for
good SOA governance; the
real need to foster
people with Business and
IT aligned skills; and
the requirement that
organizations focus on
business processes.
Richard Soley gave his
take on the top CIO
concerns, saying that
there are three general
areas, rather than
specific items that are
of concern. His top
areas are educational
concerns, operational
concerns, and driver
concerns. Each panelist
gave examples and
insights into their top
CIO SOA concerns from
their own experience in
the industry.
